Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgard was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and is the eldest son of the famed actor Stellan Skarsgard. Among his siblings are actors Gustaf Skarsgard, Bill Skarsgard, and Valter Skarsgard. His father was a well-known actor in Europe for most of the time he was growing up, but he hadn’t yet reached the level of international fame he did after starring in Breaking the Waves (1996).
Alexander grew up in a Swedish working-class neighborhood. His parents wanted him to have a normal upbringing, so they didn’t give him much. He started acting when he was eight years old. He worked in movies and on Swedish TV until he was sixteen and decided that acting wasn’t the right job for him. Life under a microscope lost its appeal, and his mother, a doctor, may have had something to do with his decision to stop acting and go back to school.
Instead of going to college, he joined the military at age 19 instead of going to school (military conscription). He used the time to think about what would happen next. He went to school at Leeds Metropolitan University, then moved to New York and started studying theater at Marymount Manhattan College. After six months in New York, he went back to Sweden because of a relationship, but it didn’t last long.
Even though Alexander’s heart was broken, he decided to stay in Sweden, and, after gaining some life experience, he started acting again. He was a star in his home country of Sweden after being in a number of Swedish productions, but he wanted to broaden his horizons and work outside of Sweden. He got an agent and a part in the Ben Stiller movie Zoolander (2001) because he went to Los Angeles.
Alexander then went back to Sweden, where he kept working on his acting skills in movies and plays like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Bloody Wedding.” He also wrote and directed the short film “To Kill a Child,” which won an award and was shown at both the Tribeca and Cannes Film Festivals.
His first major break came in 2008 with the miniseries Generation Kill. Alexander was hot and thirsty for seven months in the Namibian desert, but it was well worth it. Critics and audiences were both shocked by how he played Marine Sgt. Brad “Iceman” Colbert. After finishing Generation Kill (2008), he was cast as “Eric Northman,” a Viking vampire who is 1,000 years old, on the hit show True Blood. This was because of the writers’ strike (2008).
Alan Ball, who also directed the film Six Feet Under, created the show (2001). True Blood, which came out in 2008, was based on the “Sookie Stackhouse” books by Charlaine Harris. It was a hit thanks to good scripts, great acting, and the public’s love of vampire stories.
In addition to True Blood (2008), which starts its third season in 2010, Alexander is working on a number of film projects, such as a remake of Straw Dogs (2011), Melancholia (2011), written and directed by Lars von Trier, the action sci-fi film Battleship (2012), and The East (2013), directed by Zal Batmanglij.
