Kelly grew up in East Brady, which is 60 miles from where he was born. He graduated from East Brady High School, where he played football for the first time and showed how good he was. He then went to the University of Miami and kept playing football there. He had 32 touchdowns, and in 1992, he was put into the university’s Hall of Fame.
After he finished college, he signed up for the NFL Draft in 1983. The Buffalo Bills picked him with the fourth pick, but he refused to play for them and instead joined the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.
Before the USFL league went out of business in 1986, Jim played for the Houston Gamblers for two years. Kelly only played there for two years, but he was one of the best players in the league, so his popularity and wealth grew. In his first year, he was picked as the league’s Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and for the USFL All-League Team.
When the league broke up, he went to play for the Buffalo Bills, who had drafted him and still had his rights. He played for the Buffalo Bills for eleven years, until 1996, when he decided to stop. During those years, his popularity and net worth went up because he kept playing as well in the NFL as he had in the USFL.
He went to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 1987 and then four more times in a row until the 1992 season. Kelly and the Buffalo Bills won their first AFC Championship in 1990. They did this again every year until 1993, but they didn’t win any Super Bowls after that.
Jim also holds the NFL record for the most yards gained by completing a pass in a single game. He is also the Buffalo Bills’ all-time career leader, with 2,874 completions out of 4,779 attempts, 35,467 yards, 237 touchdowns, and 175 interceptions in 160 games over 11 NFL seasons. He also ran for 1049 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
During his career, he became the Buffalo Bills’ best player, and the team retired his number 12 jersey as a tribute to his success. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
Jim Kelly’s name is known outside of the professional football league, too, because he started football camps for kids ages 8 to 18. Since 1998, the centers have trained more than 500 future football stars each year. Some of the best players and coaches, like Jim Kelly, teach them how to play.
Jim had surgery in 2013 to get rid of cancer that had grown in his upper jaw. Cancer came back twice, but he is finally free of it. At the moment, he is promoting a book called “Kelly Tough: Live Courageously by Faith,” which was written by his wife and daughter.
