Older moms are at risk for gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. Miscarriage, stillbirth, and preterm labour are more common.

Dr. G. Thomas Ruiz, the OBGYN head at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, said Swank can safely deliver twins.

"As long as the patient realises the drawbacks and dangers, you can have a healthy baby and mom at 48," Ruiz added. "Mom has additional work."

Ruiz says Swank's perinatologist is high-risk. Older moms and people carrying multiples have more checkups, including ultrasounds every three to four weeks.

Ruiz said third-trimester bed rest is normal to prevent preterm labour. 5% of 48-year-olds get pregnant without assistance, Gaither added.
